WIMAUMA - Lee Fox, owner of Save Our Seabirds, a bird sanctuary at 2709 State Road 579, is preparing to move her feathered charges to a new home in Sarasota.
"We hope to be in before the first of the year," Fox said.
The new home is the former Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary, a refuge near Mote Marine in Sarasota, that closed down about a year ago. No one seems to know what happened to the birds formerly in residence there.
"It's a mess right now," she said of the Pelican Man's site. "Everything must be torn down and cleaned up."
She will move her song birds, birds of prey and seabirds to the new home after the cleanup is completed.
Fox will continue to live in Wimauma with her husband, Paul, and travel to Sarasota daily. She said she will maintain the hospital in Wimauma so that rescued birds may be tended to before transporting them to Sarasota.
Fox was approved for ownership by the review committee from the purchasing department of the city of Sarasota.
The next step is to take her proposal before the city commissioners, which should be in the near future, Fox said.
"Once the commissioners accept the proposal a contract will be signed, and we'll be ready to start the cleanup," she said.
