Flamingo Drive Motorists Face Detours

APOLLO BEACH - Attention, Flamingo Drive residents: Just when you thought it was safe to come out of your driveways, county workers announce another detour.

Construction crews will close the intersection of Flamingo at Fairway Boulevard at 9 a.m. Jan. 5. Workers need room to install curbs and sidewalks and rebuild and repave the base of the intersection.

Hillsborough's communications department suggests Flamingo motorists detour around the work zone by way of Florida Circle. People hoping to drive onto Flamingo from Apollo Beach Boulevard using the Fairway bridge also will have to detour, accessing Flamingo by way of U.S. 41.

That detour was used early last month, when the county closed the Fairway bridge and later the Flamingo intersection to make emergency repairs. The bridge was reopened Nov. 19. This time, the detours are expected to continue through Feb. 4.

Lane Items

Hillsborough officials have approved permits for the following intermittent lane closures on roads in the south county area to allow construction work:

•In Riverview, the westbound lane of Boyette Road from U.S. 301 to King Oak Drive may be closed through Feb. 15 to allow replacement of a handrail along the roadside.

•In Ruskin, the intersection of 14th and Sixth streets southeast may be affected by drainage improvements through March 31.

•In Sun City, crews will be resurfacing Chaney Drive between U.S. 41 and Sunny Drive, potentially affecting the eastbound lane through Feb. 8.
