APOLLO BEACH - The Apollo Beach Chamber of Commerce's recent fundraiser for the Manatee Arts Festival was a "Wild Adventure."
More than 200 partygoers donned bush jackets and safari hats for the event Oct. 20 at Southshore Fall's clubhouse.
The night included a treasure hunt, a costume contest and a silent auction.
The highlight of the event was the Jody Whitmyer-conceived silent auction scene, which was an island plane crash.
She credited John Sharpe of Aviation Consultant Services of Wimauma and Russell Clark of Tantrum Services in Apollo Beach for their help.
Whitmyer and other volunteers tried to get a Cessna with landing wheels inside the clubhouse, but it was too large. They then brought a plane without landing wheels, managing to get it inside.
After the plane was inside, the volunteers tipped it so it would look like a crash and rigged lighting to make it appear that it was on fire, with smoke belching out of it throughout the evening.
The Manatee Arts Festival will be March 8-9 in Apollo Beach. For information, call the chamber at (813) 645-1366 or visit www.apollobeach chamber.com.
