SUN CITY CENTER - The third annual Sun City Center United Methodist Church Golf Tournament on Oct. 10 attracted 120 golfers and 24 dining participants to Falcon Watch Golf Club.
Thanks to the help of the following individuals and business sponsors, $1,650 will be divided among the Good Samaritan Mission in Balm, the Mary and Martha House in Ruskin and the Redlands Christian Migrant Association in Wimauma.
Wayne and Shirley Bengston, co-chairs of the tournament steering committee, worked with the Rev. Julian Graham, Connie Kehl, Jan McCready, Tony Petree, Don Quast, Shirley Walker, Mike Whitt and Aaron Zimmerman to make the event a success.
Before the tournament play began, Maurice Musholt, dressed as a clown, ran a putting contest in which Jack Hanna won first place; Quast, second; and Herman Weston, third. Petree and Rich Walker ran the chipping contest. First-, second- and third-place winners were Jerry Harter, Petree and Jack McGregor. While the contests were taking place, keyboardist Ellis Ware and guitarist Herman Weston performed.
The team of Wilma Allred, Ann Clark, Len Jones and John Rusnacyk won first place. Leonard Howard, Verna King, Larry Madrano and Petree took second. Third place went to Jane Boccieri, Kathy Boccieri, Jim Raymond and Mike Sekol. Pat Dahl, Ginny Dunn, Ziggy Seigfried and Phil Sortore came in fourth.
Mike Evans shot the longest drive for men; Walker for women. Bobbi Ulbrich won first place for closest to the pin; Ann Clark won second.
No one took home the Buick Lucerne offered by Brandon Buick to any golfer scoring a hole-in-one on hole 8; however, everyone won at the banquet table.
"Our meal after golf was catered by Rich Schuler, who did a wonderful dinner for us," said Shirley Bengston.

"This overview should be quite interesting, especially in light of recent events," said club publicist MaryLouise Baker in an e-mail. The club's charity recipient this month is the James A. Hoosiers Host Patriotic Evening
SUN CITY CENTER - The Sun City Center Indiana Club invites Sun City Center residents and their guests to a patriotic get-together at 5 p.m. Nov. 10 in Community Hall, 1910 S. Pebble Beach Blvd., for a social hour, potluck dinner and entertainment by the Little Hometown Soldiers in honor of Veterans Day.
The performers use song, drama and recitation "to reach out to kids whose parents or loved ones have gone to war," said Elaine Hopkins, nine-year U.S. Army veteran and founder, and president of the Christian-based but not-church-affiliated Little Hometown Soldiers. Her multicultural group of 20 children ages 3 to 16 has existed "since 2003, since the war started," Hopkins said.
"We have no stand on the war, but we want to support the troops and their families," she said.
The group writes letters to soldiers, visits veterans and Shriners hospitals, and "if someone is killed in action, and if it is requested, they will attend funeral services to perform and make a presentation to the children," Hopkins said.
Admission to the club's get-together is $5 plus a covered dish. Reservations should be made by Wednesday by calling Beck, (813) 634-5892.

McGinley is the author of "Mulligan's Name Was Ambrose," a book that has been selling on www.amazon.com for nine years. McGinley described the book as "a collection of mostly humorous short articles and cartoons that ... was used as a fundraiser for the Mary and Martha House. It originally sold for $10."
One of the book's poems, "A Golfer's Thank You Note to God," was recently reprinted in Tee Time, a woman's golf magazine that is published quarterly in New England and distributed nationally.
