RUSKIN - The Friends of the SouthShore Regional Library, 15816 Beth Shields Way, will host extravaganza Saturday celebrating the library's first anniversary.

Beginning at 10 a.m. and again at 11:30, Manuel Escudero will play piano. About 10:30 a.m., student art contest winners - determined by judges Doreen Donovan, president of the Brandon League of Fine Arts, and Virginia Laudano, education director for the Sun City Center Art Club - will be announced and prizes awarded. The students' full-color paintings representing the theme "The Natural World around Us and How It's Disappearing" will be on display.

"The winners' paintings will be printed as notecards," said Joan Shalleck, director of the arts for the Friends of the South Shore Regional Library and event chairwoman. "They should be available for purchase by early December to benefit the Friends" who will use the money to support the library.

Leah Jackson will teach half-hour cartoon classes for children between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Beginning at noon, Fred Jacobsen, Mark Dunn and Mac Miller will outline the history of Ruskin. Dunn, with the help of some of his Cypress Creek Elementary School students, will describe how he teaches history.

John Ruskin's books, on loan from the Ruskin Library, will be exhibited in a glass case.

Dolly Cummings will set up a display about the Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center, of which she is education director. From 1 to 1:30 p.m. the Front Porch Pickers will perform.

A Harry Potter and the Library Cup Tournament will try to baffle Muggle (a term for nonwizards) contestants of all ages with trivia questions from all of the books in the series.

A Team Trivia Challenge for teams of any four people is set for 2 p.m., and at 4 p.m. there will be Family Trivia Challenge for groups of up to three related people and an Individual Entries Trivia Challenge. Entrants must register at the library up to half an hour before the event.
