RIVERVIEW - In addition to hitting the hardwood to prepare for the first season of varsity competition, members of the Spoto High School boys basketball team also took to the school's football field.
In mid-October, with more than a month before the start of the season, the varsity and junior varsity squads ran around the school's track and climbed the football field's bleachers as part of head coach Eric Brooks' conditioning program.
The first day of basketball practice inside the gym for both boys' teams was Oct. 29.
Last year, the junior varsity team finished the season with a 2-18 record.
"We're still looking to improve on last year," Brooks said. "We know it's going to be tough because it's our first year, but I still expect us to compete every single night."
The Spartans will open the season at home against Plant City High School on Nov. 20.
