RUSKIN - Local artists displayed their works throughout the South Shore area Oct. 14 in the South Shore Arts Council's second Arts Frolic.

Among the participants were Beth Howard, who exhibited at the South Shore Gallery in Apollo Beach; Frances Hereford, at Southern Grace Inc. Gifts and Home Decor in Ruskin; and Craig Todd, who demonstrated his painting technique at Wilhelm Heating and Air Conditioning in Ruskin.

The free event "was a great success," said Anne Madden, council president. "Over 100 'frolickers' toured the six venues and enjoyed the works of dozens of artists. Freedom Plaza went the extra mile and provided bus transportation along the route."

The next public arts council meeting will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Resort and Club at Little Harbor, 611 Destiny Drive, Ruskin.

"We are seeking new board members, volunteers and interested parties who would like to lend a voice and a hand to the arts council," Madden said. "If you have ever made a financial contribution to the council, you are a member. If you want to be a member, bring your checkbook."

SUN CITY CENTER - The new Friends of European Brass club will present the 10-piece European Brass band in concert Thursday at Community Hall, 1910 S. Pebble Beach Blvd.

Club members may join the festivities for $6 per person; nonmembers for $8.50.

"For those wishing to join the club," said Jeff Landis, club vice president, "the $5 dues would make you eligible for the member price. ... There is no requirement to play an instrument, just a love of music."

Tickets will be available at the door for $10.

Veterans Day Ceremony Planned

RIVERVIEW - A tribute to America's current and past military men and women will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Serenity Meadows Memorial Park, Funeral Home and Crematory, 6919 Providence Road.

Mike Wick, Serenity's president, invites people "to give thanks to those who have served and continue to serve freedom's cause. ... America's veterans, who represent the best of our nation, have placed our country's security before their own lives and remind us that the defense of freedom comes with great loss and sacrifice."

David Braun, president of the Hillsborough County Veterans Council, will introduce special guests, including Becky Herndon, president of the Amvets Post 44 Ladies Auxiliary and president of District 3, and U.S. Naval Reserve Petty Officer 1st Class Sivenson Guerrier.

Guerrier served 11 years in the U.S. Navy and volunteered for a one-year deployment to Afghanistan before enlisting in the Naval Reserve. He is on the team of the Why We Serve speakers program, sharing his experiences serving in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Also participating in the tribute will be Boy Scouts Troop 110 and choirs from Riverview and Bloomingdale high schools. Refreshments will be served.
