RUSKIN - Ronald Carford, commander of the Apollo Beach Sail and Power Squadron, with James "Don" Freeman, education officer, and Jackie Freeman, secretary, recently presented a certificate of appreciation to senior librarian John Bostick of the SouthShore Regional Library for allowing the squadron to hold its Boat Smart and Chart Smart courses there.
"The idea of using the library facilities came about when John Bostick ... spoke to the squadron membership earlier in the year," said squadron member Charles Feldschau.
The squadron is part of a 93-year-old boating organization comprising 450 squadrons across the country. It focuses on boating education, the environment, community service "and just plain water-related fun," Feldschau said.
Anyone interested in pre-registering for upcoming safety courses and inspections may do so at the squadron meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5309 U.S. 41, N., Apollo Beach. There is no obligation to join the squadron.

'Kindergarten' Play To Double As Audition

"'Kindergarten' gives us lessons on life and how to live it by using short snippets of meaningful dialogue and music," said Ed Mason, drama and thespian sponsor at the high school. "The production is lighthearted, cute, thought provoking and just a real good time. You will learn the values in sharing, caring and even flushing."
Onstage will be Sarah Mitchel, Meagan Stevenson, Jordan Dorsey, Sam Roberts, Lindsey Mutert and Travis Duncan.
"I saw this production years ago and fell in love with it ...," Mason said. "I think our audience will enjoy the characters' antics.
"There is a twofold reason that this show could be something special for Durant's Thespians. This production will be judged by Florida State Thespians with the hope of being selected to perform again in April at the Florida State Thespian Festival at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center."
Tickets are $8 per adult or $7 per student and senior and may be reserved by calling Mason at (813) 757-9075, Ext. 280, or by e-mailing him at Edward.Mason@sdhc.k12 .fl.us.

Pelican Players Present 'Marrying Walt'
SUN CITY CENTER - The Pelican Players will present James Danek's comedy, "Marrying Walt," at 7:30 p.m. Sunday and at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Kings Point Clubhouse Theater, 1900 Clubhouse Drive.
Tickets, $8 per person, are available at the clubhouse box office.
"The play is a fast-paced comedy about two seniors Walt, played by Bill Turcotte, and Mary, played by Mick Milano living together in a trailer park in Central Florida," said producer Chet Budziak. "Everyone agrees this play is uniquely appropriate for all residents of Sun City Center."
This "fun-filled event with a bit of drama," said Dora Murray, publicity chairwoman for the Pelican Players, explores the theme that "men and women are as different as night and day."
Many of the cast members "have considerable background in community theater," Budziak said, "and are particularly enthusiastic about how our senior residents can identify with the humor and characters of the play."
They include Judy Michael as Walt's daughter Randee; Hank Wolf as Walt's son Lory; Delyse Axinn as Mary's neighbor; the Rev. Tracy Wilder as Father Tom Goldman; and Richard Axinn as the Vegas taxi driver. Mary Ann Mosely is a producer; Rose Ostrander is prop person.
"Joanna Rudy, director and Polly Schneider, assistant director, bring extensive theatrical experience to the show," Budziak said.
There will be a meet and greet after each performance that "will give members of the audience a chance to chat with the cast and partake in some complimentary refreshments," Murray said. "Do come."
The Pelican Players' board of directors has started a patron program, coordinated by Faye Bradford. A donation of at least $25 will grant patron status. Contributions will fund the Pelican Players' scholarships for area high school students studying fine arts in college.
Patrons' names will appear in playbills. Patronage may be renewed annually and may be made as a memorial tribute in the name of another person. An annual thank-you event will honor patrons.
Those interested in becoming a patron may send a check payable to The Pelican Players with the patron's name on the memo line in care of Faye Bradford, 1603 Hovington Circle, Sun City Center FL 33573-6318.
