Published: October 6, 2007

SUN CITY CENTER - The Art Club of Sun City Center will present a pastel demonstration by Wanda M. Carter at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Rollins Theater, 970 Cherry Hills Drive.

The demonstration is free and club membership is not required.

Carter grew up in East Detroit, Mich., earned a bachelor's degree in education and taught for 30 years in Michigan, California and Germany before moving to Florida.

In 1978 she began working with pastels, a change from earlier oil portraiture. Her teachers of note are Daniel Greene and Michael Del Priore. She is a member of the Southwest Florida Pastel Society and the Portrait Society of America. Her work is displayed at the Lemon Tree Gallery in Englewood, the LK Artworks in Sebring and in the Gallery at 890 in Port Sanilac, Mich.

Carter 'is especially interested in painting portraits of people and animals, preferring to work from life, capturing the personality of the subject,' said a recent note from Ed Laudano, art club publicity chairman.

The demonstration will begin after a cookies-and-coffee social at 1 p.m. and a short business meeting at 1:30 p.m.

At the Sept. 15 competition, Apollo Beach resident Smithwick's speech about buying his first computer won the Humorous Speech Contest. Sun City Center's Green won the Evaluation Contest. She evaluated a seven-minute speech on prohibition given by Francine Webb. Mary Hernandez, area governor, congratulated the two winners.

Urban Kayaking Adventure Offered
SUN CITY CENTER - On Thursday the Sun City Center Kayak Group will 'enjoy an urban kayaking experience along the route of Tampa's proposed Riverwalk,' said Mike Raff, outings leader.

Members meet Thursdays at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of the Winn-Dixie, 4445 S.R. 674, then drive to the launch point. In this case, kayaks will enter the Hillsborough River at Riverfront Park, 1000 N. Boulevard in Tampa, 26 miles from Sun City Center.

After meeting at 9 a.m. Oct. 18 in the Winn-Dixie parking lot, 'we may do our own shuttle between Morris Bridge and Rotary Park,' Raff said. 'This would allow us to enjoy a 9-mile downstream paddle.' Oct. 25 will find the group exploring the Braden River and perhaps the Manatee River as well.

Each participant should bring a life preserver, whistle, snack, sun protection and insect repellant. More information is available at web.tampabay.rr.com/scckayakers or from Raff, (813) 642-8624.
