Balm Landfill Changes Hands

Published: October 10, 2007

BALM - A landfill in Balm has undergone a slight makeover after being acquired by a Canadian-based company.

Waste Services Inc. of Ontario purchased both Sun Country Materials LLC and Liberty Waste LLC for $38.5 million in May 2006.
Sun Country Materials, 11457 C.R. 672, Balm, is the former owner of the 126-acre landfill, and Liberty Waste will continue its collection operation, which is based in Tampa, with two transfer stations in Tampa and Clearwater.

'We are very happy with the acquisition of both companies because it will strengthen our company's presence in the Tampa area,' said Shari Rheuble, regional sales manager for Waste Services.

According to Rheuble, the landfill opened its doors under the Waste Services name Oct. 1, after completing two new cells, the places where trash is stored within the landfill, designed for construction and demolition material in September.

'It's been really busy with our October opening, but we've gotten off to a strong start,' said Jim DeLuca, territory manager for Waste Services' Tampa Division.

Although the landfill is under new management, it will look very similar from the outside. Rheuble said the 'Sun Country Materials' sign will remain in front of the facility's entrance on County Road 672. Eventually, Waste Services will add its own signs throughout the property.

Waste Services, which has its U.S. headquarters in Boca Raton, owns or operates seven landfills, 21 transfer stations, 11 recycling facilities and 36 collection companies.

The company serves an estimated 90,000 commercial and industrial customers and about 1.2 million residential customers.

There is a ribbon-cutting ceremony, organized by the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce, scheduled for Oct. 17 at the landfill.

'It's been more than a year from the time the property was acquired to our opening this month,' Rheuble said. 'It's exciting to get to see it get off the ground.'
