GIBSONTON - The East Bay High School girls soccer team took the first step in its district title defense Oct. 8, the first day of tryouts.
'At the beginning of last year, the goal was to win our district, and we did that,' said Claudine Sosa, now in her 11th year as head coach of the Indians girls' soccer team. 'I think we can be successful again this year.'
The team finished the 2006-07 season with a 14-1-2 record and the Class 6A-District 8 championship but lost its first-round regional match against Countryside High School.
This year, the team will have to do without the services of Sosa, who is pregnant and due to give birth in November. Once she goes on maternity leave, she will be temporarily replaced by her husband, Albert Sosa.
'He knows a lot about soccer, and the team will be in very good hands,' Claudine said. The team also added assistant coach Rebecca Wickham to the staff.
Seventeen girls attended the first day of tryouts, which were scheduled for Oct. 8-12. Several starters from last year were missing due to commitments to other sports.
The team will open the 2007-08 season Oct. 30 at King High School in Tampa.
