Published: October 17, 2007

APOLLO BEACH - Newland Communities, developer of MiraBay, will hold a family Pumpkin Festival from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the entrance to MiraBay, 107 Mann's Harbor Drive, off U.S. 41.

After the pumpkin activities are completed, families are invited to stay and listen to live outdoor music.

The family event is free; donations will be accepted for the activities, and food tickets will be sold. The festival is sponsored by Newland and Life is good, an apparel company that specializes in colorful clothing and accessories. Its signature is the smiling logo of a character named Jake and the words 'Life is good.'

Among the events at the festival are a pumpkin-carving contest, arts and crafts by The Florida Aquarium staff, games, scarecrow stuffing and a bean bag toss.

Proceeds from the festival will benefit HomeAid, a nonprofit provider of housing for the homeless, and Pediatric Cancer Foundation, which funds research into childhood cancers.

It is the second annual festival for Newland Communities. Last year the housing developer raised more than $400,000 for charities through the festivals held in locations across the country. This year, the festivals will be held in 11 Newland Communities sites.
