RUSKIN - In her first year as coach of the Lennard Longhorns' junior varsity cheerleading squad, Andria Ward is impressed by her team's ability and enthusiasm.
She's not the only one.
'We get more people at our games than the varsity team does,' Ward said. 'We have a lot of fun, the crowd is very enthusiastic and we're very interactive with them - we get them to cheer back at us a lot of times.'
The 10-member team cheers during Lennard's junior varsity football games and will cheer during the basketball team's varsity and junior varsity contests when their season gets under way in mid-November.
They also perform in all pep rallies, including a Nov. 1 event the night before the Longhorns' homecoming game against Mulberry High School.
In addition to their in-school activities, the squad has organized several community fundraisers - including a car wash and coin collection in area businesses - to help buy equipment for the team.
Still, the tight-knit team - which meets for a weekly dinner Thursday nights before football games - is most at home cheering on the Longhorns.
'I think my favorite thing about cheerleading is Thursdays - game nights,' said sophomore Victoria McGlinsey.
