The Doctor Is In The Medical Spa

Published: October 20, 2007

RIVERVIEW - Ravneet Sandhu has always been interested in the process of aging and aesthetic medicine.

Until recently, the board-certified internist focused solely on owning and operating Care Plus Walk-In Clinics with her husband, Jagdeep.

In September, Sandhu, 40, shifted that focus to embrace the dream of opening a state-of-the-art medical spa.

The practice, Lotus Med Spa, offers skin treatments without the use of oral medications. Other treatments include laser hair removal, Botox, Restylane and Juvederm injections, and a new technology called Acoustic Wave therapy, which uses sound waves to break down cellulite.

Partnering with the Center for Medical Weight Loss in New York, Lotus Med Spa also offers a weight-loss program. It includes everything from appetite suppressants and liquid diets to injections.

'We've had tremendous results,' Sandhu said.

Clients agree.

'I never in my life imagined I could get to a healthy weight,' said Kolleen Spinelli of Valrico. On a liquid and limited solid diet for eight weeks, she has lost more than 20 pounds.

'I've tried every other diet out there,' she said. 'This works.'

Born and raised primarily in India, Sandhu and Jagdeep went to medical school there, graduating in 1990 and 1989, respectively. She and her parents moved to the United States in 1985, but Sandhu returned to India to attend medical school for free.

The year she graduated, the two became engaged and moved back to the United States. They were married in 1992. The following year Sandhu began her residency at Abington Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia, completing it in 1996.

They moved to Florida in 1997, and Sandhu started to work at Brandon Regional Hospital. Crazy hours and long workweeks led the couple to open a private practice in Brandon in late 1997, eventually opening walk-in clinics in Brandon, New Tampa and Carrollwood.

The couple live in Andalucia in Apollo Beach with their son, Shabaaz, 14, and daughter, Mannat, 11.

In 2006, Sandhu began a year of training in aesthetic medicine to prepare for the opening of Lotus Med Spa, which is named after the national flower of India.

The spa will celebrate its grand opening Thursday. Starting at 11 a.m., the event will feature complimentary minimassages, skin analysis, facials, eyebrow waxing and more. There will also be refreshments, door prizes and a drawing for a spa package worth $1,500.
