Craft Fair To Serve Some Sweet Treats

SUN CITY CENTER - United Community Church, 1501 La Jolla Ave., will hold its annual craft fair from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

'Come and shop for the many items made with God's love,' said Hazel Martin, spokeswoman for the church.

Handmade jewelry, greeting cards, holiday decorations and wood carvings will be for sale.

Linda's Sweet Shop will offer coffee, sweets and lunch items that are 'made from family favorite recipes,' Martin said.

Laureate Zeta Kappa Celebrates Halloween

RUSKIN - President Connie Stephan called to order the Happy Halloween meeting of Laureate Zeta Kappa of Beta Sigma Phi on Oct. 18 at the home of Ann Powe in Ruskin.

Powe's decorations followed a storybook theme, and prizes were awarded for the best stories behind memorial place settings brought to the meeting by members.

The sorority sisters participated in a mimosa sunrise brunch Oct. 20 at Stephan's home, co-hosted by Rose Ciaravalo.

Speaker To Highlight Trips To Iraq, Asia

TAMPA - The Tampa Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America will meet for lunch at 11 a.m. Nov. 8 at the MacDill Air Force Base Officers' Club.

Bob Hite, news anchor for WFLA, News Channel 8, will be the special guest.

Marine Corps Capt. Seth M. Lynn, assistant inspector instructor of the 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion, Tampa, will speak about his two deployments to Iraq and a trip to Cambodia and Vietnam.

Sun City Marines To Celebrate With Ball
SUN CITY CENTER - Members of the Sun City Center Leathernecks Club will hold their annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball at 4 p.m. Nov. 10 in the Florida Room of the Atrium Building, 955 North Course Lane.

The U.S. Marine Corps, which was established on Nov. 10, 1775, is 232 years old.

Night Hart, a husband-wife duo will sing. A ceremonial cutting of a Marine Corps birthday cake will take place. This is, traditionally, the club's biggest social event of the year.

Tickets for Leathernecks Club members are $25, for all others, $28. Beer and soft drinks will be provided. Other refreshments may be brought by attendees.

Riverview Marines Will Serve Buffet

RIVERVIEW - The Riverview detachment of the Marine Corps League will celebrate the birthday of the Corps at 7 p.m. Tuesday at American Legion Post 148, 7240 U.S. 301.

Brig. Gen. David C. Garza, deputy commander of the U.S. Marine Forces Central Command, will be the guest speaker. A buffet dinner and cake-cutting ceremony will follow his talk. All former Marines are invited.

Local Knights Win International Award

RUSKIN - Carl A. Anderson, chief executive officer of the Knights of Columbus, dubbed the Knights of Columbus Council 7210 of St. Anne Catholic Church a Double Star Council for 2006-07.

The council was recognized for overall excellence in membership recruitment and retention, promotion of the Knights insurance program and sponsorship of service projects. Because the council recruited twice as many new members as was their goal, they earned the title of Double Star Council.

When District Deputy Jim Merckling presented the award at a special meeting Sept. 29 at St. Anne, Grand Knight Fran Nason, head of Council 7210, said, 'Receiving the Double Star Council Award is quite an honor for us. We're extremely proud of this accomplishment.'

Fashion Designer, Author To Speak
SUN CITY CENTER - The American Association of University Women, Sun City Center branch, will hold a luncheon meeting Nov. 10 in the Florida Room of the Atrium Building, 955 North Course Lane.

A social half-hour at 10:30 a.m. will be followed by a program by guest speaker Helga Harris, fashion designer, artist and author. Lunch will be served at noon.

Harris' career in the fashion industry and as a fashion design instructor preceded her publishing a book, 'Dear Helga, Dear Ruth.' It contains letters written to her by childhood friend Ruth Scherzer Roizblatt after the two were separated in World War II.

The cost of the luncheon is $25. Reservations and prepayment are required by Saturday. Checks may be made out to AAUW, SCC, and sent to Maryellen Thomas, 835 Oakmont Ave., Sun City Center FL 33573. Proceeds will benefit the Mature Women's Scholarship program.
