RUSKIN - The Pelican Players Entertainers' Variety Show, held in August at the Golf Club at Cypress Creek, was a dinner theater in which even the entrees were stars.

Frank Sinatra, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Mickey Rooney, Bette Davis, Louis Armstrong and Jack Lemmon were mouth-watering meal options for the 110 people in attendance.

After the meal, master of ceremonies Bill Barker sang and amused the crowd with his stand-up comedy routine.

The new Pebble Beach Bunch cranked out swing tunes featuring Alyson Barrett on vocals, Bill Rudy on trumpet, Rick Barfield on guitar, Ron Carlson on drums and Pelican Players President Chuck Wirick on keys. In addition, Barker, Troy Conman, Pat Raimondon, Bob Garrod and Al Spatola sang, accompanied by Barfield and Wirick.

'Troy Conman and Bill Barker did a hilarious version of 'Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home,'' said Dora Murray, spokeswoman for the Pelican Players. 'Judy Branch did a wonderfully funny comedy routine.

'Joanne Reid and Jeanne Naish did a clever routine of hard-of-hearing seniors, and Richard Axinn and Delyse Axinn of a couple driving in the countryside,' Murray said. These two vignettes were part of the Readers Theater, in which performers use scripts, 'but so discreetly that no one is aware of them.'

To book the Entertainers for a special event, birthday or club meeting, call Wirick at (813) 892-9243.

'All contributions given to the Entertainers are donated to our scholarship fund,' Murray said. The fund is helping 25 students, each of whom receives $750 per semester for four years. More than $300,000 has been provided to South Shore area students since 1984.
