Workshop To Search For Riverine Turtles
RUSKIN - Interested adults are invited to attend a workshop and explore the spring-fed Rainbow River by canoe and snorkel in search of imperiled species of riverine turtles with turtle researcher and conservationist George L. Heinrich at a Riverine Turtle Workshop at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center, 315 S. Tamiami Trail.
'Florida is home to over 8 percent of the world's known turtle species,' Heinrich said. 'Seven species 28 percent of Florida turtles are principally riverine, ranging in size from the small loggerhead musk turtle to the giant alligator snapping turtle. These turtles, as fascinating as they are, probably receive the least attention when it comes to research, management and conservation education.'
Techniques for identifying the turtles and information about their natural history, threats to their survival and conservation needs will be covered in a slide presentation as well as hands-on activities with live animals and bio-artifacts from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the center.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, there will be a field trip to the Rainbow River in Dunnellon that will include canoeing and snorkeling. The outing 'will provide a firsthand opportunity to learn about riverine species such as the loggerhead musk turtle and Suwanee cooter,' Heinrich said.
Heinrich owns Heinrich Ecological Services in St. Petersburg and is the founding president of the Florida Turtle Conservation Trust. A graduate of Memphis State University, he has studied Florida turtles for 20 years and is a past co-chair of the Gopher Tortoise Council.
The workshop registration fee is $75. For information or to request registration forms, liability and medical release forms, call Heinrich at (727) 865-6255 or e-mail him at George@heinrichecological services.com or visit www. heinrichecologicalservices .com.
