Hillsborough To Let Out Boundaries As Schools Grow

Published: August 1, 2008

Three new schools will open in August, and more changes are in store for 2009-10 as the district prepares to open an additional five schools.

Opening this year:

Doris Ross Reddick Elementary, Wimauma

Sylvia Rodriguez Kimbell Elementary, Temple Heights

Sergeant Paul R. Smith Middle School, Citrus Park

Opening in August 2009:

Elementary L and Middle School SS, Lake Hutto in southern Hillsborough

George Steinbrenner High School, Lutz

Elementary J and High School UUU, eastern Hillsborough near Interstate 4 and McIntosh Road

As always, the new schools will trigger attendance boundary adjustments to fill the new buildings, ease crowding and make room for future growth. The district approved changes last spring for the three schools opening in 2008-09 and will hold meetings this fall about filling the schools opening next year.

Bill Person, general director for pupil placement and support programs, said district staff started meeting this summer with schools that could lose students to redistricting.

The district will take suggestions from schools and parent associations to put together boundary proposals. Community meetings will start in September or October for families to learn about the potential boundaries and offer feedback. The district takes the feedback and may make minor changes or overhaul plans before presenting the proposals to the superintendent and school board.

Families will receive letters home about possibly telephone alerts with meeting dates and reminders. For the first time, the district will invite parents from existing schools that would receive new students under boundary changes.

Person said he hopes to bring boundaries for Steinbrenner High School and High School UUU, a temporary name, before the board in December. He would like to have the elementary and middle school boundaries set by February.
