RUSKIN - In May, the Lennard High School basketball program helped organize a faculty-student basketball game that raised nearly $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

In August, the school hopes the community will come out to support the program.

On Aug. 23, the school will host its third golf tournament to benefit its basketball team at the Golf Club at Cypress Creek, 1011 Cypress Village Blvd.

The past two years, the tournament has raised money for the boys basketball team. This year, for the first time, proceeds will go to the boys and girls squads.

"We were talking about it in April, and we said, 'Let's work together and try to help both teams out at the same time,'" said Joe Willis, coach of the boys' varsity team of a conversation with girls coach Sandy Marshall.

Willis is hoping to get 12 to 18 foursomes to participate. So far, six teams have committed.

"We really don't have a set goal or a target we're going for as far as how much money we raise," Willis said. "Every bit we get will help our team."

The money will not just be used for basketball equipment. The proceeds also will go toward helping cover the costs for team meals, summer camps, travel expenses and other special events.

In addition to 18 holes of golf, the $60 registration fee will include a lunch buffet and a gift bag.

"There's a sort of saturation of the market out there with a bunch of different golf tournaments going on right now," Willis said. "We're trying to encourage as many people as we can to participate by having a relatively low price for this event."

"None of the players on my team have had to pay more than $20 out of their pocket the first two years," he said. "We really want to keep it that way."
