Riverview American Legion Post Installs Officers

RIVERVIEW - New officers of the American Legion Alafia Post 148 were installed July 20 at the post by Kathryn Ferrin, commander of the 15th District.

A luncheon for officers and guests was held after the ceremony.

The new leaders are Bob Underhill, commander; Joe Amos, first vice commander; Thomas Cobb, second vice commander; Roger Dunn, chaplain and adjutant; Bobby Elliott, finance officer; and Bob Root, sergeant-at-arms.

Executive board members are Mike Tenay, Jack Skelding, Thomas "Cosmo" Horman and Steve Sapp.

New members are welcome. "All veterans are encouraged to contact the post to determine eligibility," Skelding said.

The public is invited to attend Labor Day weekend festivities at the post, 7240 U.S. 301 S. There will be a Texas Hold'em poker tournament, with registration beginning at 1 p.m. and the tournament at 2 Aug. 30; a steak shoot at 2 p.m. Aug. 31; and an open house with food and a show by country western singer Jenny Rimmer from 1 to 5 p.m. Food tickets will be $8.

The poker tournament first prize with be worth $300, second prize $200 and third prize $100. The entry fee is a $30 donation to support the troops.

Summertime Rock 'n' Roll By Tillotson

SUN CITY CENTER - The Sun City Center Community Association will play host to Johnny Tillotson and Rocky and the Rollers from 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 30 in Community Hall, 1910 S. Pebble Beach Blvd.

Tillotson's best-known songs include "Heartaches by the Number," "You're the Reason" and "Poetry in Motion."

He was born and raised in Florida and graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in journalism and communications. One of his compositions, "It Keeps Right on A-Hurtin'," was recorded by Elvis Presley and landed in country music's top 20 when recorded by Billy Joe Royal.

Tickets are $25. Attendees may bring drinks and snacks.

Bits And Bytes

SUN CITY CENTER - The Computer Club's fall classes will be from 10 a.m. to noon in the Computer Lab, 949 North Course Lane.

Classes in Microsoft Word will begin Oct. 13, and will be offered for four consecutive Mondays.

Microsoft Excel classes will start Oct. 15, and will be taught on four consecutive Wednesdays.

Instruction in Quicken will begin Oct. 18, for three consecutive Saturdays.

An Introduction to Computers class will start Oct. 28, and last for four Tuesdays; another Introduction to Computers class will begin Oct. 31, for four Fridays.

A $20 fee is due at registration. The fee can be turned in between 12:30 and 5 p.m. daily (except Sunday) in the classroom. Classes are limited to 12.

Children's Chorus Being Formed For Musical

SUN CITY CENTER - The Performing Arts Club of Sun City Center will audition boys and girls ages 8 to 11 at 6 p.m. Monday in Rollins Theater, 970 Cherry Hills Drive.

The auditions will involve learning and executing a song-and-dance routine.

The chorus will participate in the club's show, "Merrick ... the Brilliant Beast of Broadway," which will be performed three weekends, beginning Oct. 23. Lew Resseguie will direct the show.

We "are seeking children who can sing and move well and who are comfortable on stage," said Ellen Kleinschmidt, chorus director. "At the moment the chorus is a one-show project that could develop into something far more active."

The number of children involved will depend on the skill and experience of the children auditioning, Kleinschmidt said. There is no fee to participate.

Retired Lawyer Assumes Part-Time Pastorship

SUN CITY CENTER - If it seems the new part-time pastor at United Methodist Church of Sun City Center can make a passionate case from the pulpit it may be because Gary Bullockwas a defense lawyer with the Cincinnati-area firm of Dinsmore and Shohl in his first career.

He moved to Sun City Center with his wife, Cam, and his mother-in-law, Margie Mills, after retiring from full-time ministry at the New Covenant United Methodist Church in The Villages There, as founding pastor, his congregation grew from zero to more than 1,400 members in eight years.

In Sun City Center he will work with the outreach and hospitality teams, visit hospitals and lead worship services.

Bullock replaced the Rev. Julian Graham, who retired from part-time service June 30. Graham will continue to assist the missions' ministry and represent the church at community events and his wife, Linda, will continue helping with the church's Pages of Life Bookstore.

Everyone's Birthday Party

SUN CITY CENTER - United Community Church collected about 30 backpacks, school supplies and more than $500 for Metropolitan Ministries at an "everyone's birthday" party July 20.

The event was coordinated by the Rev. Ruth Richardson and included members of the Suncoast Koinonia, a group of Florida Suncoast-area United Church of Christ congregations.

Bill Barker sang songs to represent every month of the year and Jo and Robert Winslow accompanied on keyboard. Attendees ate birthday cake and ice cream after a meal of fried chicken and trimmings.

Soldier's Mom Gets Helping Hand

TAMPA - Nelida Bagley, mother of Army Staff Sgt. Jose Pequeno, a soldier wounded in March 2006 in Ramadi, Iraq, received a check in June from retired Army Lt. Col. Robert F. Sawallesh of Valrico, vice chairman of Operation Helping Hand, an outreach of the Tampa Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.

Pequeno is being treated for serious head injuries at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa. He was sent there from Walter Reed Army Medical Center. When members of the Tampa association heard that his mother has lost her home and spent her life's savings to care for her wounded son, they decided to come to her aid through Operation Helping Hand.

Other Operation Helping Hand members present were retired Navy Capt. Robert J. Silah of Carrollwood, chairman of the group; and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Richard E. Siegman of Valrico, treasurer. Also in attendance for the presentation were Elizabeth Bagley, Pequeno's sister; registered nurse Marti Veneman, rehabilitation; and physician Steven G. Scott, chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Operation Helping Hand provides needed money and helpful gifts to the families of wounded soldiers being treated at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital. For information, go to www.moaatampa.com.

Sun City Center Church Woman Recognized

SEBRING - Barbara Schuler received a Florida United Church of Christ Lay Woman of the Year 2008 award at the state conference for the United Church of Christ Women in June in Sebring.

She had been selected United Community Church Woman of the Year 2008 by the Women's Fellowship of the Sun City Center church this past winter.

Art Club Choses Artist Of The Month

SUN CITY CENTER - Art Grundberg is the Art Club of Sun City Center's Artist of the Month for August.

His two- and three-dimensional pieces will be on display through the month at the Sun City Center Library, the chamber of commerce, A.G. Edwards, the golf and racquet club, the visitors center and in the showcase in front of the Art Room.
