Girl Helps Critters Needing Homes

Published: August 27, 2008

RUSKIN - Critter Adoption and Rescue Effort, a no-kill animal shelter at 1528 27th St. S.E., recently received a donation worth more than $50 from 10-year-old Olivia Thomas.

She baked homemade dog biscuits that she sold in her Brandon neighborhood and then bought toys and treats for the dogs and cats at CARE.

"I love cats and dogs," Olivia said. "I also like that this is a no-kill shelter and actually gives them a fighting chance."

From now through September, CARE is offering special packages with each cat adoption, including a free bag of food, toys and a video about cat care. The cats are current with vaccinations and free of feline disease; they have been or will be spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter.

Senior discounts are available for people at least 65 years old who adopt adult cats - felines older than 6 months.

The shelter has seen "an explosion in the birth of stray and homeless animals," said Don Hinderliter, president of the board of directors of CARE. "Our temporary housing limits at the shelter are really stretched, and we consequently have a large selection of cats to choose from."

Visiting hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. For information, call (813) 645-2273 or visit www.careshelter.org.
Mary And Martha House Aided By Young Women

The Shop Till You Drop yard sale July 26 at the Mary and Martha House Thrift Store brought in more than $2,600, including $70 from a lemonade stand run by Laney Mullins and Crystal Marino.

The shelter aids south Hillsborough County women in crisis.

"Bunny Heilman from Ruskin, first-time shopper, said, 'I came in to support you, and, wow, you have great stuff,'" said Jan Falcione, manager. "Diane Waronka of Apollo Beach was surprised at all the new clothing as well as gently-used. Linda Macferran commented that we are the best-kept secret in Ruskin. We had folks waiting at the door to get in."

For information or to contribute to the shelter, call Falcione, (813) 645-7874.
