Published: August 27, 2008

RUSKIN - With summer coming to a close and slightly cooler weather on the horizon, more boats will be hitting the water in search of fish.

An upcoming South Shore tournament will ask anglers to fish for a good cause.

On Sept. 6, the 12th annual Southern Equipment Inshore Fishing Tournament will come to the Inn at Little Harbor. The event will also feature an awards dinner, auction and drawing.

"It's pretty much the biggest event we do all year and it's for a good cause, so we're looking for a lot of people to come out," said Herb Gold, human resources and marketing director for Southern Equipment.

Southern Equipment Corp. is a Tampa-based mechanical contracting company established in 1952.

Gold said 100 percent of the proceeds from the drawing and auction will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He said proceeds from the fishing tournament will also be donated to Make-A-Wish after operating costs for event are covered.

Established in 1980, the foundation fulfills the wishes of children with terminal diseases.

Bryan Berry, president of Southern Equipment, said last year's tournament raised more than $21,000 for the foundation. He also estimated that, during the event's dozen-year existence, $110,000 had been donated to Make-A-Wish.

Gold said he is expecting 125 people to participate in the tournament and 185 to attend the awards dinner.

"The people who fish during the day usually end up bringing their families to the dinner," Gold said.

He hopes to match or even surpass the amount raised last year.

"We know it's tough with the way the economy is now, but we've still got high hopes," Gold said. "If we hit the same number we hit last year we'll be happy, but we're really hoping to get more."
