Historian Wins Society's Award
RUSKIN - Local historian-turned-singer/songwriter Frank Garcia recently won the third annual Historic Preservation Award from the Ruskin Historical Society. He also recently released his original song, "Corazón de Tampa," on YouTube.
The award came for Garcia's documentation of the 100 years of Ruskin's history and the founding of the Paleontological Education Preserve exhibit at Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center.
"Today I remember those magical moments in West Tampa and Ybor City that held me in its grasp and embraced me with a youthful innocence of joy and wonder, when I was a young boy growing up in Tampa," Garcia said. "What little of the red brick streets remain were the pathways to the different places in this town that helped form the inner core of my being. While I live outside of Tampa today, Tampa has never really left me."
You can hear the song and watch Garcia's video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQvsqZGTzDI.
Art Club To Host Demo

Ikin uses her art to portray the beauty of the world, to "build awareness, while at the same time leaving a legacy," she said on her Web site, www.taylorikin.com. She hopes to increase awareness of the public's ownership of natural places.

Christmas Homecoming
RUSKIN - A Christmas cantata called "A 1940s Christmas Homecoming" will be presented by the chancel choir of Ruskin United Methodist Church as part of its scaled-down 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. worship services Sunday in the church, 105 Fourth Ave. N.W. Directed by Robert Romanski, the choir and a 10-piece orchestra will perform big-band arrangements of carols and other songs.
The cantata unfolds the story of Lt. Edwin Berry, overseas in World War II, who has been selected to join his family for a special Christmas homecoming. Instead, his commanding officer sends him on a dangerous mission to save lives - something only he can do - which makes his trip home impossible, perhaps forever.
