APOLLO BEACH - Hundreds of residents turned out for Community Fun Day at the SouthShore Community Event Park Dec. 6.
The six hours of festivities were part of a weekend celebration of Apollo Beach's 50 years. The event featured arts and crafts vendors, nonprofit and business booths, the annual plant sale by the Apollo Beach Beautification Committee, a farmers market and plenty of children's activities.
Live entertainment was provided by The Warehouse Rockers, Apollo Beach Elementary School's Dolphin Magic performers, a choral group from Doby Elementary School and the South Shore United Methodist Church Praise Band.
Representing county commissioner Rose Ferlita's office, Sandy Ottino presented a 50th birthday proclamation from the Hillsborough County Commission to Meg LaLonde, president of the Apollo Beach Chamber of Commerce.
Mark Nash, aide to soon-to-be commissioner Kevin Beckner, also attended the ceremony. In addition, the community received a letter from Gov. Charlie Christ and an AARP "membership," the first of its kind in the country, said Kevin Conlan, master of ceremonies.
"I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout and am looking forward to our 100th anniversary in 2058," he said. "One way or another, I plan to be there."
