SUN CITY CENTER - Sarasota resident Linda Thompson will present a free acrylic demonstration sponsored by the Art Club of Sun City Center, at 1 p.m. Feb. 14 in the Art Room, 954 Cherry Hills Drive.
First on the agenda will be a coffee-and-cookies social followed at 1:30 p.m. by a short club business meeting and the demonstration.
Thompson, a native of Canton, Ohio, moved to Florida in 1973 to work as a commercial artist and illustrator. Her paintings depict local wildlife in their natural habitats.
She paints realistic-looking sea critters underwater "by using a wet on wet application of color and textures. I let water make my water," Thompson said. "I am totally fascinated by the amazing world under the ocean.
"I gather material wherever it is available, and that includes aquariums, the backrooms and working areas of zoos, beaches, Sea World, Mote Marine, the creek that runs through my daughter's property. ... I have spent lots of time on a sailboat and snorkeled."
Thompson is a member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society and the Society of Animal Artists. Mill Pond Press publishes her work. To view her paintings, visit www.linda thompsonart.com.
Yachtsman Of The Year Has Gibsonton Connection
GIBSONTON - Jeff Linton of Tampa, brother of Gibsonton's honorary mayor Laura Iuzzolino, was named 2007 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year on Jan. 16.
He will be honored with an engraved Rolex timepiece at a ceremony Feb. 29 at the New York Yacht Club in Manhattan.
The award is given to sailors (one male, one female) who have exhibited outstanding competitive achievement. Linton's achievements include having won the 2007 Lightning World Championship in Athens, Greece; the 2007 Lightning Winter Championship in St. Petersburg; the South American Championship in Bogota, Colombia; the Florida District Championship; and the Lightning Deep South Regatta in Savannah, Ga.
"This was a remarkable year," said Linton, 45. "Everything fell into place."
Linton grew up in Florida in a family of sailors. "Jeff was always with us the family when we were off sailing together," Iuzzolino said.
"I will never forget the time that my dad, my brother John and I were sailing with Jeff fast asleep in the bottom of the Thistle that we were sailing. A really bad squall came up in the Bay, and my dad was out of the boat holding one of the stays to steady us. We were on a sand bar and lightning hit the mast and traveled down the mast, down the stay Dad was holding and shocked John and me in the boat and, of course, my dad. And Jeff was still sleeping in the bottom of the boat through the shock and everything."
"I used to sail with Jeff in a couple of Thanksgiving regattas many, many years ago," she said. "Of course with him at the helm we were guaranteed the win.
"As I think about it, my family is quite extraordinary. We take each other for granted until you really sit down and think of the really unbelievable things that we have done together as a family!"
