Follies A Potpourri Of American Music
SUN CITY CENTER - The Pelican Players, a South Shore community theater group, and other "card-carrying theater union members," said Dora Murray, publicity chair for the players, are rehearsing for the 2008 Follies
The show will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 29 and at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. March 1 at the Borini Theater (formerly the Kings Point Theater), 1900 Clubhouse Drive.
Director Jane Cheevers' theme for the show is "The Potpourri of Great American Music."
Bill Barker will sing and serve as master of ceremonies, which will be dedicated to the late Bud Marnach, who performed in 17 Follies.
The Follies' chorus, along with soloists Troy Coman, Babs Comonoli, Ed Fleming, Mai Gibson, Al Spatola, Herb Stack, NY Jimmy Wilkom and John Cortese will perform Broadway, Hollywood, gospel and western tunes.
The Country Cloggers, Silver Tappers, Time Steppers and Sunsations will dance. Rose Ostrander is the producer, and Keith Postle will manage the props and sound backstage.
"The generosity of the performers is outstanding, as not only do they perform without monetary payment, but also they provide their costumes and props. This has been a tradition since 1984," Murray said. "All monies after expenses go to the Pelican Players' scholarship fund."
The fund provides four-year $1,500 scholarships to area students majoring in the arts.
"The Follies is our best money-raising production," Murray said, "so let us entertain you. ... While you are enjoying the follies, you are supporting local students.
Upon completion of their college life, they return ... to enrich the community. A prime example is Daron Hawkins, one of our scholarship students, who is a source of inspiration for his Riverview High School students and others."
Another way to contribute to the fund is to become part of Patron Program. To do so, send a check, minimum is $25, payable to the Pelican Players, with the patron's name on the memo line, to Faye Bradford, 1603 Hovington Circle, Sun City Center FL 33573.
Follies tickets are $11; all seats are reserved. People with Sun City Center Community Association badges or Community of Kings Point badges may purchase tickets at the Kings Point Box Office, 1900 Clubhouse Drive. Those without badges can call Rose Ostrander, (813) 633-1753, for tickets.
Anyone interested in joining the Pelican Players may call Barbara Brtva, (813) 633-9028, or attend the membership meeting at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Banquet Room of the Kings Point Clubhouse, 1900 Clubhouse Drive. Board members will be elected at the meeting.
