LITHIA - This month, health-conscious Floridians are being encouraged to take advantage of the largest gymnasiums at their disposal - state parks and greenways.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is joining with the Florida Department of Health to participate in a statewide campaign to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles called "Step Up, Florida - On Our Way to Healthy Living!"
"Florida's state parks, greenways and trails offer safe and resourceful ways to improve health while enjoying natural surroundings," said Bob Ballard, deputy secretary for the DEP.
Throughout the month, state parks and greenways will host nearly 50 activities across the state to encourage visitors to live a healthier life with physical activities such as walking, hiking, yoga or cycling.
On Sunday, the Alafia River State Park, 14326 County Road 39 S., will have a mountain bike excursion through the park's off-road mountain bike trails.
The excursion, which will start at 9 a.m., will be led by members of SWAMP - the SouthWest Association of Mountainbike Pedalers.
"Outdoor recreational activity is an invigorating alternative to indoor fitness routines and a great way to stay active and motivated in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle," Ballard said.
Participants must register in advance and helmets are required.
