Summerfield Gets Adult Leagues

RIVERVIEW - All of those New Year's resolutions involving weight loss may become easier to keep as South Shore residents have the opportunity to get fit by signing up for a new adult sports league.

Registration began Jan. 1 for Florida Sports Leagues, which will begin play this month at the Summerfield Community Center, 13011 Summerfield Blvd.

Meghan Fogg, facility director for the center, said play is tentatively scheduled to start Monday.

"We already have a lot of youth sports programs, so we're really looking forward to having this new league start up," Fogg said.

The league will offer coed kickball, softball, flag football and basketball, as well as competitive men's softball for more experienced players.

Anyone 18 and older can sign up either as an individual or as a team. There also is a discount available for Summerfield residents.
Florida Sports Leagues has adult sports leagues in Hillsborough County - serving Apollo Beach, Brandon, Valrico, Lithia and Seffner - and Pinellas and Pasco counties.

Its mission is to provide social and networking opportunities, as well as a competitive environment where people can enjoy themselves.

Gregg Iras, head of Florida Sports Leagues, said he had wanted to establish a league near his home. The Panther Trace resident lives about five miles away from the Summerfield Community Center.
Fogg said the idea was brought to Summerfield late last year, leaving enough time to make preparations for the 12-week winter season starting this month.
Fogg said anyone interested may register online at any time.
