Published: January 12, 2008

RUSKIN - Organizers of the upcoming SouthShore Plein Air Festival need artists, sponsors and venues to make the three-day event a success.

The call is out for about 40 artists, venues where they can paint and additional money to cover costs associated with the festival.

At numerous South Shore locations, artists will paint in plein air from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 28-30.

"Plein air" refers to an art style that requires painting spontaneously in nature, dealing with shifting light and shade and other variables of the outdoors.

The festival will include a reception from 1 to 6 p.m. March 30 at The Resort & Club at Little Harbor, 611 Destiny Drive in Ruskin.

Some possible artist venues include the Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach, Camp Bayou, E.G. Simmons Park and Little Harbor. A finalized list of sites is needed by Feb. 15.

The South Shore Arts Council is sponsoring the event, in conjunction with The Resort & Club at Little Harbor, the Community Foundation of Greater Sun City Center and the John and Elizabeth Crawford Fine Arts Fund. The foundation and the Crawford fund will provide four cash prizes, ranging from $500 to $2,500.

Artists must submit three slides of their work by Feb. 1 and will be notified if selected to participate.

For information or to make a donation, contact Anne Madden at (813) 645-3732 or anne.madden1@verizon.net. Madden will provide information on electronic registration for artists as well.
