Chris Biuso of Temple Terrace won his second Florida Junior Tour title of the golf season with an 11-under par total of 133 at the Venetian Golf and River Club in Venice last Sunday.
Biuso, who just completed his senior season for King high and will play for the University of Louisville in the fall, shot a second round of 66 that included six birdies and no bogeys to take the title by five shots from Curtis Thompson of Coral Springs and Sebastian Szirmak from Toronto.
"I knew I had to play well so I stayed focused on my game and not what everyone else was doing." Biuso said. "I putted really well and hit my drives long and straight. On the back nine of the final round, I was focused on making pars and not making any bogeys."
Biuso was tied with Thompson after both players shot an opening round of 67, but Thompson was unable to stay with Biuso in the second round, shooting a 71.
After winning the opening tournament of the season, Biuso finished fourth twice at the following two events before a 24th at Hunters Creek in November. Biuso said after his second round that he had been working on some aspects of his game.
"I've been changing some stuff with my game and working really hard," Biuso said. "It's good to play two really solid rounds and know I'm going in the right direction."
Biuso remains in second place in the FJT's player of the year standings with 2,820 points.
Ian McConnell of Riverview finished in fourth place with a 5-under par total of 139 after shooting an opening round of 68. George Letson of Tampa finished in a tie for 10th with an even-par total of 144.
Jennifer Neville of Bradenton won the girls event, finishing with a total of 151 to win by one shot over Crystal Smith of Venice. Amy West of Valrico finished in fourth place, five shots back.
After his fourth finish on the FJT, McConnell won the Greater Tampa Junior Golf Association's title at Avila on Monday, shooting a 75 to finish three shots ahead of Gary Buffington of Tampa.
Kimberly Carpenter of Tampa won the girls' event by one shot ovef A.J. Newell of Tampa. Carpenter finished with an 85 for the one-round event.
In other local golf news, the International Junior Golf Tour's Mizuno Eastern Mid-Season Championship is being held at the TPC of Tampa Bay this weekend. The tour holds three tournaments a year in the bay area, with an event at Saddlebrook Country Club scheduled for April.
Newsome Blue Continues To Roll
Newsome Blue came back strongly from the Hillsborough High School Hockey League's holiday break with a 10-2 win against Plant, allowing the Wolves to maintain a two-point lead at the top of the league standings.
Nine different Wolves found the scoresheet, with Jared Chinn recording a goal and three assists. Johny Maiello scored twice for the Wolves, giving him 10 for the season. Alex Siegman had a goal and an assist for the Panthers, with Chris Read also finding the net.
Freedom maintained its pressure on the Wolves as Ed Kuba scored a hat trick for the Patriots in an 8-1 win against Wesley Chapel. Kuba now has seven goals on the season. Chance Letson added a pair of goals for the Patriots, who also got goals from Carey Coleman, Taylor Cowieson and Conor Murphy.The Ice Cats lone goal came from Nate Gotschall.
Newsome White took advantage of a shorthanded Tigers squad with a 4-1 win as Brendan McGowan scored twice for the Wolves.
The Tigers only had eight skaters available, but cut the Wolves lead to 3-1 early in the third period on a goal by Charlie Kutt,. The Tigers were unable to cut any further into the lead as Zach Michniewicz added a late goal for Newsome.
The win moves Newsome White above Bloomingdale, as the Ice Bulls lost 13-0 to Riverview/Durant. Nick Feira scored a hat trick for the combined team as Riverview/Durant moved into a tie for third with the Tigers. Joey Heyer added a pair of goals and three assists, making him the first player to reach 20 goals this season.
Nick Barnes, Jason Wayne and Stephen Guerre each scored twice, while Brett Galley recorded the shutout.
Wharton came back from a two-goal deficit to beat George Jenkins 4-2. George Prieto scored twice for the Wildcats, his 15th and 16th of the season, as did Matt Cazes.
Jason Jensen had given the Eagles a 2-0 lead, but Prieto cut the lead to 2-1 at the end of the second period. Cazes then scored twice in the third period before Prieto added his second with just over three minutes to play.
GYMNASTICS: Local gymnasts will get their first chance to show off individual routines at the first event of the optional season at the University of Tampa over the weekend. The compulsory routine season ended in December.
The Tampa Bay Classic, hosted by Lightning City Gymnastics, is the first of a number of events that will lead up to the state championships in April.
"The kids are going to be very excited," Tampa Bay Gymnastics coach Rick DeSantis said. "You get pretty bored with the compulsory routines week after week, so they're ready to burst out and we as coaches are, too. "
