Rotary Club Elects Officers, Directors For New Year

SUN CITY CENTER - The Sun City Center Rotary Club elected officers and directors for 2008-09 at a meeting Dec. 14.

They are Jim Wilmouth, president; Georgana Collins, vice president; Branko Lobo, past president; Bill Moon, vice president; Thom Brown, secretary; Linda Yepez, treasurer; and Bill Pappmeier, sergeant-at-arms.

Directors are Sherry Crosby, Bill Wheeler, Allen Vergrugge, Kay Dyer and Bob Hauser. Avenues of Service chairmen are John Williamson, club service; Sam Cook, community service; Ed Knecht, international service; Sally Nichols, vocational service; Sean Shanahan, youth service; and Janet Richwine, Rotary Foundation.

The club meets at noon Fridays at the Plaza Club at Freedom Plaza, 1010 American Eagle Blvd.

"Our club has about 50 members; men and women," said Rod Grant, bulletin editor. "It was started here in Sun City Center in 1970 and is a service club in the truest sense of the word. We have money-making projects such as golf tournaments and selling pecans. We provide scholarships to local high school seniors for advanced education, roses for shut-ins on Rose Day every September, dictionaries for all fifth-grade students in local schools and other projects that vary from year to year. We recently built the gazebo on the main campus in Sun City Center."

Church Offers Dance Academy
APOLLO BEACH - A dance academy will be offered at South Shore United Methodist Church, 435 Apollo Beach Blvd.

The classes will be held from 1:15 to 3 p.m. Mondays for preschoolers and kindergartners; from 3 to 4 p.m. for first- through fifth-grade advanced students; from 4 to 4:45 p.m. for preschoolers and kindergartners; and from 5 to 6 p.m. for first- through fifth-grade beginners.

Sorority, Kindergartners Send Greetings To Iraq
SUN CITY CENTER - Pat Pelton, a resident of Sun City Center and substitute teacher at Cypress Creek Elementary School, asked kindergartners and teacher Nancy Waddell and her Beta Sigma Phi (Xi Xi Omicron chapter) sorority sisters to write cards and letters to Peter Leone's unit in Iraq thanking them for their service, sorority sister Rosie Clifton said.

Leone, deployed for the second time to the war zone, is the son of the Rev. Lou Leone and his wife, Barbara, of Sun City Center.

The students wrote and decorated letters and cards. They "were very enthusiastic about the project," Clifton said, "and even made a video of themselves singing Christmas carols for the troops."

The students and sorority also collected CDs, DVDs, pictures, lip balm, razors, gum and blank greeting cards that they sent to the soldiers.

Heritage Hunting Topic Of Genealogy Course

RUSKIN - The South Bay Genealogical Society will hold a genealogy course, "Heritage Hunting," from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for eight consecutive Saturdays, except April 19, beginning March 15 at the SouthShore Regional Library, 15816 Beth Shields Way.

The course will be taught by Sharon Tate Moody, a certified genealogist, national lecturer and weekly columnist with The Tampa Tribune. She will provide an introduction to genealogy and explain how to glean information from the census, birth and death records, military and land-use records, naturalization and the probate process.

American Legion To Meet
SUN CITY CENTER - American Legion Post 246 will meet Friday in Room 3 of Community Hall, 1910 S. Pebble Beach Blvd.

Coffee and doughnuts will be available from 9 to 9:30 a.m. before the start of the meeting.

Kenneth Barringer, clinical psychologist and chairman of the Coalition on Mental Health and Aging, will be the guest speaker. He teaches at Community Church College and at the Hillsborough Correctional Institution in Riverview.

It's Burlesque Time For Woman's Club
SUN CITY CENTER - The GFWC Sun City Center Woman's Club will present "The Best of Burlesque 2008" at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at Community Hall, 1910 S. Pebble Beach Blvd.

Featured in the show will be Las Vegas performer Sandy O'Hara and writer, producer and director David Hanson.

Residents of Sun City Center and Kings Point are invited to attend.

Admission is $20 per person. Tickets are available from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the ticket kiosk in the Atrium Building, 945 N. Course Lane, and at the door the night of the show. For information, call Angela Wallace, (813) 642-0212.

Church Introduces The Bible
SUN CITY CENTER - United Community Church, 1501 La Jolla Ave., Sun City Center, is hosting a New Testament overview, "Introducing the Bible." It will be taught by senior minister Michael Evans from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 30 through March 12.

This is "designed to provide a basic understanding of God's plan," said Hazel Martin, publicity coordinator. The cost is $5 per person for the series.
