Published: January 23, 2008

RIVERVIEW - Treated to performances by Riverview High School's Vision show and gospel choirs, about 150 members applauded as the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce's 2007 award winners were announced.

The crowd had gathered at the International Independent Showmen's Association for the chamber's fifth annual membership dinner Jan. 16. The three-hour event also included solo performances by Riverview Idols Amy Bueno and Joshua Moody, and an unscheduled performance by "Elvis," a k a Bill Lindsey.

"I was tickled by all the positive comments I received," said Kitty Cunningham, the chamber's executive director. "From the facility and the food to the entertainment and the impromptu Elvis performance, everything got rave reviews."

Giving his final address as outgoing president, Jim Johnson talked at length about the chamber's commitment to its members and the dedication and hard work of the chamber board, ambassadors group, leads groups and especially the chamber staff.

"Without them, not one of us could accomplish a thing," he said, likening the three-member staff - Sandra Rounds, Laurie Conover and Cunningham - to the unseen portion of an iceberg.

The Business of the Year award went to Huth & Booth Master Photographers. Jill Andrews of Superior Residences of Brandon garnered the Business Person of the Year award, and Bill and Kay Wallin of K & B Travel took home the Ambassadors of the Year honor.

Bill McMullen was named the Riverview Citizen of the Year, and Sherri Walker of Riverview received the Margy Watkins Volunteer of the Year award. Watkins, now in her 80s, is considered by many in the community to be the epitome of volunteerism. The award is named for her in recognition of her many years of supporting the chamber and its staff.

To cap the evening, Billie Gordon was installed as president for 2008 along with board members Diana Niles of YMCA Camp Cristina, Carol Todd of Valrico State Bank and Sherri Walker of Cranetech Inc.

The Tampa Tribune was among sponsors of the dinner.
