WIMAUMA - WIMAUMA - An end is in sight for long detours around a damaged bridge in southern Hillsborough County.
County spokesman Patrick Murray said employees worked long hours over the July 4 weekend and expect to open one lane of the County Road 579 bridge over the Little Manatee River by July 18, if weather permits. The bridge has been closed since June 27 after the discovery of rotten supports.
The work crew managed to encase two rotten wood pilings in concrete, shoring up the bridge for limited traffic. However, an inspection turned up another nine damaged pilings, Murray said.
To make repairs, the county will have to keep one lane of the bridge closed for the next few weeks.
The bridge is just north of the Hillsborough-Manatee county line. Residents on both sides of the bridge have been required to use U.S. 301 as a detour since the bridge was closed.
