RIVERVIEW - Before its athletes take to the football field this fall, representatives from a youth sports organization will hit the golf course.
On July 26, the South Shore Jr. Longhorns will host their first golf tournament at the Summerfield Crossing Golf Club, 13050 Summerfield Blvd., Riverview.
"This is our first year with the golf fundraiser and we plan on making it an annual event," said Dean Walters, president.
Proceeds will benefit the organization, which has already raised about $13,000 following a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Sun City Center in February.
The South Shore Jr. Longhorns is a nonprofit, all-volunteer Pop Warner youth football and cheerleading organization that will serve Apollo Beach, Riverview, Ruskin, Wimauma and surrounding communities.
Lennard High School's football field will host the league's games.
Walters said the goal was to raise about $25,000 by the end of the first season in November.
He expects 20 to 25 foursomes at the golf tournament and hopes the event will raise between $6,000 and $10,000.
The tournament will tee off with a 1 p.m. shotgun start, feature putting and hole-in-one contests, and will be followed by a dinner and awards ceremony at 5:30.
"The proceeds will be used to buy practice equipment for the kids like dummies, ropes, a sled," Walters said. "Since it's our first year, we're really starting from scratch in regard to gear."
The day after the tournament the Longhorns will have their final registration day, as well as a uniform fitting day for registered players at the Ruskin Recreation Center, 901 Sixth St. S.E.
The team's tackle football teams are full, but slots are still available for flag football, for ages 5 to 7, and cheerleading, for ages 5 to 15.
Walters hopes to have about 300 players registered by the start of the season.
The first practice is scheduled for Aug. 1 at the Ruskin Recreation Center.
