WIMAUMA - The County Road 579 bridge over the Little Manatee River opened to traffic Wednesday night.
But the bridge, which is just north of the Hillsborough-Manatee county line, will need to be closed for short periods over the next few weeks to finish the repair work.
The bridge was closed June 27 after county engineers found two rotting supports that required immediate repairs. After closer inspection another nine damaged wooden pilings were discovered.
Work crews have completed the most critical work, but five more pilings need concrete poured around them. When poured, the bridge will be closed to allow the concrete to cure.
Initially the bridge was closed only to heavy trucks, but officials revised their plans and shut down access to all traffic. Residents on both sides of the bridge were required to use U.S. 301 as a detour.
