Road Reopening Delayed Again

Published: June 4, 2008

RUSKIN - A popular shortcut will be blocked a little while longer, thanks to a second deadline extension on a drainage improvement project at 12th Street Northeast and Slipper Key Road.

The stretch of 12th Street between 19th Avenue Northeast and U.S. 41 provides a shortcut for motorists traveling from the east side of Ruskin to Apollo Beach. It has been closed since April 22 for work that originally was to take about three weeks. Officials last week extended the deadline to Friday.

County spokesman Steve Valdez said a contractor had to tear out a section of 12th Street to replace a stormwater cross drain. The road couldn't reopen as scheduled because the contractor has had difficulty getting asphalt for repaving, he said.

RIVERVIEW - A contractor working for Verizon will have crews out in the Boyette Road area removing underground utilities in conjunction with ongoing road widening and drainage improvement projects.

As a result, Hillsborough County officials have approved intermittent lane closures on McMullen Road at Boyette between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., beginning Monday. The work is scheduled for completion June 13.

Nighttime lane closures for that project also have been approved on Boyette between Balm-Riverview and McMullen roads through Friday.
