About 120 Deloitte employees who usually push computer and calculator keys in their air-conditioned offices in Tampa put their hands to shovels and rakes Friday, helping the Tampa Metro YMCA's Camp Cristina spruce up its grounds before summer camp opens Monday.
Volunteers replenished landscaping, cleared nature trails and painted the open-air stage backdrop. About a dozen Deloitte employees pulled indoor duty, drafting a new personal finance curriculum for the YMCA to introduce to teenage counselors in training.
The effort was part of the financial services firm's ninth annual Impact Day, observed by Deloitte offices across the United States.
Camp Cristina director Bryan Beckham said the 55-acre property has two part-time maintenance workers who stay busy just mowing the grounds.
The facility expects to welcome nearly 200 youngsters a week this summer, and Beckham predicted returning campers will notice the new look.
"They'll think, 'They [the community] are investing in us.'"
