APOLLO BEACH - The county last week unanimously approved a request by Newland Communities, developer of the 5,000-home Waterset project, to allow 50 to 60 smaller homes on small lots on the interior of the development.
The smaller homes, the developer said in its applications, is to increase the diversity of the housing in the project and to make some of the homes more affordable to smaller families, singles and empty-nesters. Also, the homes would be energy-efficient units and be affordable for teachers, police officers and others who might not otherwise be able to afford a home at Waterset, which is on the east side of U.S 41.
The revised standards for lot sizes and square footage of the homes will be "reminiscent of the casitas or shotgun-style houses found in Ybor City at the height of the local cigar industry, but with the modern amenities desired by today's home buyers," the application from Newland Communities states.
No one spoke at the public hearing to support or oppose the request.
