RUSKIN - It's summer, and some parents are looking for interesting things for their children to do. If you have daughters ages 11 to 14, the Ophelia Project of Tampa Bay has something special to offer them.
The organization will host its third annual Summer Bash from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 28 at the Ruskin Community Service Center, 201 14th Ave. S.E.
Billed as a day of self-expression, empowerment and celebration, the event will feature entertainment, music and lots of activities. Participants will have the opportunity to make new friends and learn to express themselves through music, dance and poetry.
Last year's event drew 60 teenage girls, and organizers hope to increase that number this year.
"This free event is a chance for girls to come together and spend the day having fun and enriching themselves, as they learn positive communication skills," said Dee Fridella, service center manager. "It's all aimed at helping them improve their self-esteem and build healthy relationships."
The Ophelia Project is a nonprofit organization founded in 1997 in Erie, Pa. The Tampa Bay affiliate was founded five years ago. Part of its core mission is to provide social and emotional support for adolescent girls, helping them to form healthy peer relationships in a safe social climate.
Lunch is also free. Space is limited and registration is required.
