Family Naturalist Program Wraps Up

RUSKIN - Two final days of the Camp Bayou free Family Naturalist Program will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, addressing the topic "What lives beneath our feet and what is a keystone species" - and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, for a watershed celebration, at Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center, 4140 24th St. S.E.

The watershed celebration will include food, games and prizes. People who have attended the Family Naturalist program in the past may attend free; those who have never participated in the program may attend for a $5 per person donation.

Artist Of The Month Is Self-Taught
SUN CITY CENTER - The Art Club of Sun City Center chose Bill Cox its Artist of the Month for June.

Cox is an award-winning, self-taught artist from Carmel, Ind. He creates commissioned portraits from black-and-white or color photos and paints reproductions of the old masters' works.

His oil paintings will be displayed through Monday at the Sun City Center Library, Sun City Center Chamber of Commerce, A.G. Edwards and Sons, the Golf and Racquet Club, the Sun City Center Visitors' Center and the Art Room Showcase.

2 Musicals On Tap

VALRICO - Tampa Bay Family Theater, which draws child actors from the South Shore and greater Brandon areas, will present two musicals: "Annie Junior" at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Center Place Fine Arts and Civic Association, 619 Vonderburg Drive, Brandon; and "Willie Wonka Junior" at 2:30 and 7 p.m. Saturday in the Church Alive sanctuary, 1603 Bloomingdale Ave., Valrico.

The directors are Tyler and Amy Leavitt and Karine Tolman; apprentice directors include Aaron Abell, Logan Bessell, Joshua Burdett, Emily DiMonaco, Jordan King and Morgan Rodgers for "Annie Junior." DiMonaco is the sole apprentice director for "Willie Wonka Junior."

"For the 'Annie' show we have double-cast the performances," said Amy Levitt.

Leads for the Thursday performance include: Megan Poole as Annie; Cameron Quigley as Warbucks; Madison Hayes as Hannigan; Kayla Tarver as Lily; Brandt Bessell as Rooster; Katie Coffey as Grace; and Ally Parrish, Rachel Cosmas, Jackie Golabek, Becca Burkett, Leah Harrell and Kaitlyn Shenning as the main orphans.

Leads for the Friday show include: Sarah Cool as Annie; Cameron Quigley as Warbucks; Kelsey Rodgers as Hannigan; Kara Hamilton as Lily; Brandt Bessell as Rooster; Sonia Buchanan as Grace; and Lauren Cool, Mary Beth Feldman, Lauren Lubeck, Perry Rodgers, Mikayla DuBreuil, and Maria Godwin as the main orphans.

Supporting cast members for both "Annie Junior" performances include Mary Angotti, Alexandra Aponte, Claudia Batke, Aliyah Caldas, Kendall Catone, Hailey Dickinson, Annika Ellenbogen, Connie Feeney, Emily Harrell, Jonathon Hayes, Addison Hobbs, Abigail Hublou, Destinee Keller, Jesse Keller, Lillie Lewis, Alex Longnecker, Jordan Oppolo, Madison Oppolo, Kiley Parrish, Sammy Parrish, Douglas Poole and Ellie Ryan.

The "Willie Wonka Junior" cast includes Aaron Abell, Geoffery Benjamin, Logan Bessell, Kayla Buchanan, Joshua Burdett, Kailey Carpenter, Mackinaw Christian, Taylor Cosmas-Knox, Matthew Dykstra, Darian Edwards, Jenna Green, Joey Green, Zachary Green, Danielle Gross, Ellise Marie Howell, Jordan King, Michaela King, Alex Lubeck, Kristen Merritt, Matthew Monaco, Tyler Quigley, Morgan Rodgers, Janel Rodriguez, Levi Salmon, Amanda Schapiro, Emily Schapiro, Leeza Steacker and Michelle Whitaker.

"Willie Wonka Junior" tickets are $6 for the matinee; children 5 and younger get in free. Tickets for the 7 p.m. show include a candy buffet with a candy mountain and cotton-candy tree and are $10 per person, regardless of age. Tickets are available from Wanda Keller, (813) 662-9509.

Fiber Arts Fans Get Onboard
SUN CITY CENTER - Any Sun City Center resident interested in the fiber arts should go to the Handweaver Guild of America's Convergence 2008 conference at the Tampa Convention Center.

The minibus will leave at 9 a.m. Friday from Community Hall, 1910 S. Pebble Beach Blvd.

The convention consists of workshops, lectures, tours and exhibits of fiber-related materials, equipment and items by artists who work with fibers.

Roundtrip bus tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. The bus will return at 4 p.m.

Quilt Workshop Puts Pieces Together

BRANDON - The Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Brandon will hold a workshop at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church of Brandon, 121 N. Knights Ave.

Claudia Ingram and Nancy Mitchell, both of Valrico, will demonstrate how to make a cracker box quilt.

The class fee is $15 for members, $25 for nonmembers. Participants must bring their own materials.

Learn How To Teach Adults To Read

TAMPA - The Hillsborough Literacy Council will hold a basic literacy tutor training class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the West Tampa Branch Library, 2312 W. Union St.

Attendees must be at least 18 years old and will learn how to teach adults to read, with an emphasis on vocabulary development, reading comprehension, spelling and writing. A cost of $30 for the training session includes materials.

Volunteer Training To Help The Homeless

BRANDON - Cynthia Pinckney Ministries will hold a free volunteer training class, with lunch and drinks from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the library and fellowship hall of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 402 E. Lumsden Road.

The preparation is required for anyone interested in serving the homeless and needy at the ministry's Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Past volunteers have come from Lithia, FishHawk, Riverview and Apollo Beach, as well as from the Brandon area.

The class, which will be repeated the last Saturday of each month through Oct. 25, is a prerequisite to volunteering. Children, who must also be trained if they are to be present at either holiday meal, are welcome to attend with their parents.

Churches or other organizations may schedule training sessions at their facilities by contacting Pinckney.

The United Community Church, 1501 La Jolla Ave., Sun City Center, will present "The Crucible" from 1 to 3 p.m. today; and "The Majestic" from 1 to 3 p.m. July 9.
