Students Present 'Alice In Wonderland Junior'
VALRICO - The fifth-graders in Lithia Springs Elementary School's Musical Drama Club will present Disney's "Alice in Wonderland Junior" at 6:45 p.m. Thursday and Friday and May 15-16 in the multipurpose room of the school, 4332 Lynx Paw Trail.
"This is a play that is an annual tradition here at Lithia Springs Elementary School," said Deanne Waite, publicity coordinator for the show. "Only fifth-graders are allowed to participate. They work hard all year long after school, beginning in September, and it is always a wonderful show."
Lecia McCarty, a fifth-grade language arts teacher, and Orin Linder, a music teacher, have volunteered their time after school to direct the show, with the support of Principal Mary Ann Keene.
"It really is a great experience for the kids," Waite said. She described the show as having "amazing costumes, sets and special effects; this particular play promises to be very funny."
Tickets are $6. They may be purchased as early as 6 p.m. the night of the show or in advance from 7:15 to 8 a.m. school days in Room 246.
For information, call the school at (813) 744-8016.
Junior ROTC Cadet Wins Annual Award
LITHIA - At the annual awards ceremony of Newsome High School's Junior ROTC on April 1, Roberta Jordan of the Alafia River Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution presented the chapter's JROTC Award to Cadet Brandon Correa.
Correa's officers chose him because he exemplified the qualities listed on the plaque he received: "a graduating ROTC student who has demonstrated academic excellence, dependability, good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership and fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps," said Noreta Wells, immediate past vice regent of the Alafia River Chapter.
Wells said that the chapter has given JROTC Awards for many years to six Hillsborough County high schools. Currently these are Newsome, Brandon, Bloomingdale, Durant, Armwood and Tampa Bay Technical.
Author To Speak At Luau Brunch
BRANDON - Aloha! The Brandon Christian Women's Connection, a nondenominational organization, invites women of all ages to a Hawaiian luau brunch from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 12 in the special events center at Bell Shoals Baptist Church, 2102 Bell Shoals Road.
Attendees "are encouraged to wear Hawaiian attire for this event," said Teresa Richmond, the organization's chairwoman.
The speaker will be Naples resident Joyce Schneider, author of "Life Is ... Not About Perfect: A Daily Dose of Encouragement," "Life Is More Than $100 Bills," "Chili and Chocolate Cake: My Recipe for Staying Anchored in the Storms of Life" and her newest release, "Grass Stains and Giggles: Experiencing God in the Midst of Motherhood."
Schneider's Web site, www .alifedecision.org, gives a synopsis of her story and message.
"I experienced an abortion in 1985," it reads. "At the time, I was unmarried, alone and ashamed to tell my family. I was involved with sex, drugs and alcohol and ended up pregnant and confused. ... God has taken the pain of my past and turned it around for His purpose. ... And He is ready, willing and waiting to do the same for you!"
In an e-mail interview, Schneider wrote, "I have written four books, sharing my life, so I am not about the privacy, but rather the outcome of what my story can do for another."
Singer-songwriter Amy Crain of Brandon will perform a song her mother helped her write.
"My mother passed away about a week and a half after sharing the first sentence of the song with me, back in 2003," Crain said. "That is all she could ever come up with."
The night after her mother died, Crain awoke during the night "and was inspired by the Lord to complete the song."
The luau price is $12 and includes the meal, prepared by chef Bruce Goren of Brandon; Schneider's program; complimentary babysitting (by prearrangement) by licensed professionals for children through age 5; door prizes; humorous skits; and themed decorations.
Books, including those by Schneider, will be available for purchase. A percentage of the book proceeds will be donated to the organization, which makes financial contributions to missionary families and Bible translators and provides Bible study materials to those who cannot afford them.
For reservations for the brunch and child care, contact Bobbi Gardner at (813) 657-8632 or Pat Thibodeaux at patsells@tampabay.rr.com by Tuesday.
"When making child care reservations, please give age of child or children and their first name," Richmond said. "This information helps our child care workers to plan ahead of time and prepare name tags, activities and craft projects."
For information about the organization, go to www .brandoncwc.org.
