GIBSONTON - Students from East Bay High School's past will soon gather for the benefit of the school's present and future population.
On May 17, the East Bay High School Alumni Association will sponsor its fourth annual golf tournament at the Golf Club at Cypress Creek, 1011 Cypress Village Blvd., Ruskin.
"The golf tournament is one of the biggest fundraisers we do every year," said Alberta Killebrew, Class of 1960 and president of the association. "We're hoping this one goes as well as the others."
Killebrew said a major portion of the money raised by the association each year comes from tournament proceeds.
The association - which was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 2003 - has contributed materials such as DVD players and televisions to the school.
In November, Rex Taylor, a member of the association's board of directors, presented Sharon Morris, the school's principal, with a $10,000 donation during the school's 50th anniversary celebration.
The donation was used, in part, to acquire a new sound system for the auditorium, as well as uniforms for the softball team.
"They are absolutely invaluable to us, and they do tremendous work," Morris said. "I've suggested to other principals that their schools should start their own alumni associations because we're so proud of ours."
Killebrew's goal is to match the amount of money raised last year.
"We'd like to see $10,000 again this year," Killebrew said. "If we could raise more money, that'd be all right, too."
The tournament has a 1 p.m. shotgun start and will also feature lunch courtesy of the Resort & Club at Little Harbor and dinner provided by Paragon Homes included with the registration fee. Killebrew is also trying to organize a silent auction after the tournament.
So far, about 60 people are registered for this year's event, which is open to anyone - not just former East Bay Indians.
