SUN CITY CENTER - The second annual golf tournament of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church of Ruskin attracted 108 golfers March 29 at Club Renaissance in Sun City Center.
Proceeds benefited the building fund for the construction of a new church on East Del Webb Boulevard.
"We will formally break ground on May 25 at 4 p.m.," said tournament coordinator Ilene Hemmingway. The Rev. Tracy Wilder will preside, and Bishop Dabney Smith of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida will attend.
"St. John the Divine Episcopal Church will become a two-campus church when the one on East Del Webb is completed," said Carole Del Castillo, church publicity chairwoman. "We will be the first in the Diocese of Southwest Florida with a two-campus church - one in Ruskin and one in Sun City Center."
At the fundraiser, golfers were divided into four flights - groups "of golfers that are similar in either handicap ability or gender," Hemingway said.
Flight No. 1 had nine teams. The first-place winner of the bunch was the Tampa Bay Radiology Oncology Team - Kevin House, Randy Larson, Jack Potter and Ed Vazquez.
Flight No. 2, the women's flight, contained five teams. The flight's first-place team was Jan's Team, made up of Bev Valentine, Cheryl Karpinsky, Jan Harding and Barb Strubble, members of the Caloosa Golf and Country Club.
Six teams competed in flight No. 3, one of two mixed flights. The first-place team was Ralph Kohnke, Dorothy Misenheimer, Judie Marr, and Bob Mills.
Flight No. 4, the other mixed flight, had seven teams. The first-place winner was Pliska's Team - Bob Bancroft, Gene Pliska, Carol Pliska and Chris Curry.
Chet Budziak won the putting contest; Tim Chaney came in second; and Ken McLoone and Jim Aune were runners-up. Bill Whitehead, Jan Harding, Carol Slaughter and Chaney each won a closest-to-the pin contest.
Resort Offers Free Osteoporosis Screening
RUSKIN - The public is invited to two free events at Riverside Club Golf and Boating Resort, 2550 Pier Drive.
The first is an osteoporosis screening sponsored by the Living Well Healthcare Corp. of Ruskin from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday. The company provides information and instruction to people at home, on site or at work to motivate them to manage their health independently - not only their physical health, but also their emotional and mental health, said Carolyn Tinglin, administrator of Living Well Healthcare.
The second is a program called My Time, My Story, featuring Mary Jo LoVerde and Emory Austin, that will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the resort. LoVerde will describe her step-by-step process that leads to a better-balanced life. Austin uses humor to tell stories and communicate information. That talent earned her the National Speakers Association Council of Peers Award for Excellence.
Free refreshments will be served. Free gift bags, a free prize drawing and the free chance to record one's own story will be available at the My Story Kiosk.
For reservations or information, call Shari Kirkeeng from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at (813) 641-7840.

"This is going to be a very special night for all involved ... especially me," said Ellen Kleinschmidt, event publicity chairwoman.
