Serenity Meadows Hosts Memorial Day Observance

RIVERVIEW - Serenity Meadows will present its free, annual Memorial Day observance at 10 a.m. Monday at Serenity Meadows Memorial Park, Funeral Home and Crematory, 6919 Providence Road.

"We encourage every person in our community to come out on Memorial Day and give something back to their country, which provides them so much freedom and opportunity," said Michael Wick, Serenity Meadows' president and general manager.
Scout Master Steve Saunders and the Boy Scouts of America Troop 110 will participate. The guest speaker will be a member of the U.S. Central Command. The 6th Air Mobility Wing Honor Guard from MacDill Air Force Base will present the colors. A representative from each of the branches of service at U.S. Central Command will be on hand to dedicate the new flag pole at the Patriot Cremation Gardens. There will be a wreath-placement ceremony, rifle salute, the playing of taps and a release of doves.

"Several distinguished guests plan to attend Monday's program," Wick said. "We hope everyone in the community joins us as we honor U.S. men and women who have died while in military service to their country."

A Living Flag Tribute For Veterans
SUN CITY CENTER - A Memorial Day ceremony, sponsored by Sun City Center military veterans organizations and other service clubs, will be observed at 10 a.m. Monday in the Kings Point Clubhouse Borini Theater, 1900 Clubhouse Drive.

Col. Stephen M. Fisher, commander of the 816th Contingency Response Group, 621st Contingency Response Wing, McGuire Air Force Base, N.J., will be the guest speaker. The Trinity Baptist Church choir and friends, under the direction of James Feist, will pay musical homage to the country's fallen servicemen and veterans.

Invited guests for whom a section of seats is being reserved should arrive by 9:45 a.m. Doors will open to the public at 9.

"The focus of this Memorial Day ceremony is to honor all community veterans, with special tribute paid to those veterans who have died since May 2007," said John Bowker in a recent edition of his online news service, eNews. "To date there are 150 such veterans to be recognized by a last roll call, which will be conducted concurrently with our traditional SCC living flag tribute."

Weavers To Make Trip To Conference
SUN CITY CENTER - The Sun City Center Weaver's Guild will sponsor a bus trip to the 2008 Convergence Conference at the Tampa Convention Center on June 27.

Art enthusiasts of all kinds are invited to the conference. International experts will present more than 200 workshops on topics including weaving, spinning, dyeing, digital imagery, color, design, sewing and knitting, tapestry and braiding.

Where Can Mac Users Find Help?
SUN CITY CENTER - All Macintosh computer users are invited to the next meeting of the Sun City Center Macintosh User Club at 3:45 p.m. May 27 in the Caper Room of the Atrium Building, 945 North Course Lane.

An early-bird question-and-answer period at 3 p.m. will precede the meeting.

There will be a presentation about where to find resource materials such as books, software, tutorials and other sources for answers about Macintosh products. A handout listing the resources will be available.

"There will also be some special demos and hints and tips about our favorite computer, Macintosh," said Dunham Swift, club president.

It will be the last formal meeting of the year, "although some summer activities will be scheduled and announced separately," Swift said.

Gold Donations Sought

RUSKIN - The new manager of the Mary and Martha House thrift store, Jan Falcione, formerly of Jan's Clothing, has a new request: gold.

Boggs Jewelry Store, 4845 Sun City Center Blvd., Sun City Center, will turn donations of gold chains, earrings, wedding bands, class rings and dental gold into cash donations for the Mary and Martha House, which shelters abused and homeless women and children.

Donations may be brought to the store or to the Mary and Martha House, 1009 First St. S.W., Ruskin.

Concert Leads Down Memory Lane
SUN CITY CENTER - Unity Community of Joy will host its Down Memory Lane event from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday in the Florida Room of the Atrium Building, 955 North Course Lane.

Highlighted entertainment will include Perfect Harmony, a duet made up of Gerald and Laurie Dimsdale; Take Two - Frank and Dee Weder; Sophie Tucker; and Helen Moore, a member of the Pelican Players.

Tickets are $5 at the door or in advance "from Unity members who meet Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. in the Armstrong Room," 953 North Course Lane, said Carol Oschmann, group publicity coordinator. Proceeds will benefit the Unity Community of Joy building fund.

Snacks, coffee and water will be available for purchase. Concertgoers may bring drinks.

A Few Copies Of Boating Guide Remain
SUN CITY CENTER - Since 2007, the Cockroach Bay Users Group has printed 5,000 copies of its free South Shore Nature Boating Guide.

The guides were distributed to bait and tackle stores, libraries, marinas and chambers of commerce. Some may still be available at those places, said Charlie Feldschau, group president.

Single copies are available from Feldschau, until his supply is gone, by sending him "$1 to cover postage, your name, address and telephone number," he said. His address is 720 Masterpiece Drive, Sun City Center FL 33573.

The guide highlights the waters of South Shore flats, Little Manatee River, Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve, E.G. Simmons Park and Wolf Branch. It gives boat ramp and canoe and kayak launch locations, trails for canoes and kayaks, tips for fishing, safety information about manatees, seagrass and speed zones.
