APOLLO BEACH - On April 29, motorists driving down Apollo Beach Boulevard may have noticed something was amiss.
A landmark of the Greek god Apollo was missing from the entrance to the Apollo Beach Racquet & Fitness Club.
The club's general manager, Matt Permuth, said the club received a complaint from the Treviso Homeowners Association requesting removal of the large wooden statue.
"Initially, it was a boundary issue," said club owner Mary Beth Sultenfuss. "Although the statue had been on that spot for more than 20 years, technically, it was on the Treviso property. So we moved it back to our property."
The club owns the road and right of way, Sultenfuss said. However, she is waiting for the Hillsborough County Building Services Department to tell her whether a permit is needed to pour a cement footer to properly secure the statue.
"It's a monument, a symbol for Apollo Beach," Sultenfuss said. "We've had hundreds of complaints since we had to remove it. As soon as we get word, the landmark is going back up."
