It's A Poker Runaround In Ruskin

RUSKIN - If you see teams of people scurrying about Ruskin, Apollo Beach, Sun City Center and Riverview on Saturday, get out of their way.

Competing for prizes, they will be headed to 20 businesses as part of the Ruskin Chamber of Commerce's 2008 Ruskin Runaround.

A scavenger hunt of sorts, the event starts at 9 a.m. when teams check in at Freedom Plaza in Sun City Center and ends about noon at the SouthShore Community Events Center in Apollo Beach.

The dozen or so teams of up to five people drive to designated businesses, gathering information and collecting sealed envelopes containing playing cards that will possibly qualify them for prizes.

Each stop is a business that has paid for the opportunity to showcase its products and services, while challenging each team with some kind of fun activity.

"While the Runaround is a major fundraiser for the chamber, it's a terrific benefit for our members," said Melanie Morrison, executive director. "It's a great way for business owners to drive traffic to their businesses and to educate people about what they offer.

Once all of the required stops are made, each team heads for the finish line, where they will participate in a barbecue picnic lunch from noon to 3 p.m., where the Off the Cuff band will entertain. The picnic is open to the public for $15 per person.

As each team checks in, it is permitted to open the envelopes containing playing cards collected. The top three poker hands win the teams an array of prizes.

Morrison said there is still time for businesses to sign up to become one of the stops or teams to register. The fee of $100 for either includes lunch.
