Published: May 28, 2008

RUSKIN - Forty-three adults and children sketched, wrote poetry and made crafts at the free Awesome Art in Nature event April 26 at Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center in conjunction with the SouthShore Regional Library's Crawford Art Studio.

Fred Jacobsen taught them how to make clay pots and weave fronds the way local, original native peoples might have done. Mark Dunn led an archaeological dig.

Suzanne Prach taught the participants how to draw with charcoal. Charles Cunningham and Diane Alvarez led them on a short walk to the preserve's largest live oak. They then had the group write a poem "inspired by that grand old tree," said nature center director Dolly Cummings.

"This was the first of a series of free Awesome Art in Nature events," Cummings said.

The next, with the theme "water," will take place July 26. For information or to register, call Prach at (813) 273-3652.
