Published: May 31, 2008

BRANDON - Celebrating life after loss seemed the theme of the 2008 Calendar of Cancer Survivors.

So many people bought this positive message that recently the Southeast Hillsborough Unit of the American Cancer Society was able to donate almost $7,000 from calendar sales to the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research.

The projects success was announced by Doris Sidoti of Valrico, board member of the Southeast Hillsborough Unit; Mike Evans, a physician and board president; Heather Rice of Rice Graphics, which printed the calendars; Ed Booth, board member; and Betty Huth of Huth and Booth, The Portrait Gallery, who photographed the calendar girls.

Sidoti, one of the calendar models, also recruited the others: Lila Campanelli-Purifoy of Valrico, Virginia Carter of Valrico, Dana Dittmar of Lithia, Sue Gagain of Valrico, Kathleen Jacobs of Valrico, Becky Lloyd of Valrico, Dottie Berger-MacKinnon of Tampa, Erin Messano of Riverview, Tracy Sheehan of Tampa and Peggie Sherry of Lutz.

The month of October, as well as the cover sported a photo of the Dragon Lady crew team, who are sponsored by Kathryn Kepes, a physician, and the Center for Radiation Oncology of Brandon.

"I'm actually happy to say the calendars sold like hot cakes," Sidoti said.

In conjunction with the Hillsborough Community College Foundation, which is directed by Adrienne Garcia, the AAUW branch provided scholarships to three women enrolled at Hillsborough Community College who were selected by the foundation: Pebbles Pangrazio of Ruskin, who is seeking a degree in business administration; Carmen Ruiz of Ruskin, who is working on a counseling degree; and Carmen Kimpson of Riverview, who is pursuing a degree in public relations.

Street Rod Boasts High-Tech Audio

APOLLO BEACH - Ruskin resident Jim Newberry's 1941 Willys street rod was chosen May's Cruiser of the Month at the Roamin' Oldies Car Club May 1 at Cherry's Bar and Grill.

It took two years for Newberry, with help from his friend and neighbor Bernard McIlwain, to build the car in his fabrication shop. They placed the car's cinnamon and silver fiberglass body on a frame that Newberry built and added a supercharged, 496-cubic-inch, just-under-1,000-horsepower V8 engine. The reproduction boasts modern conveniences: an automatic transmission, air conditioning and a high-tech audio system.

The Roamin' Oldies' free cruise-in takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at Cherry's, 6186 U.S. 41 N., Apollo Beach. Spectators and entrants are welcome to view about 60 collectible and antique vehicles that gather as disc jockey Joey Ferrante spins classic 1950s tunes.

11-Year-Old's Dream House Wins Contest

LITHIA - Halle Braden, 11, won the South Shore Group Real Estate's Design Your Dream House contest.

The contest was part of the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce's FishHawk/Lithia Business Council's inaugural Evening Fest on April 17 in Park Square.

Her picture portrays a large, castle-like house with double, red front doors. It sits on a hill; on an adjacent hill, a corn field grows near a large, red barn.

Real estate agent Connie Smaldone presented Halle with a basket filled with games, toys, and gift cards for winning the contest. Smaldone was co-chairman of the event committee with Melissa Snively and Rich Wycovich from Bank of Tampa.

Christian Rock Bands Coming To Area

BRANDON - Breakthrough Student Ministries of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church will host a youth concert at 6 p.m. June 17 in the church's Breakthrough Hall, 3315 Bryan Road.
