SUN CITY CENTER - Members of an area golf club got an early jump on Memorial Day festivities this year.
On May 25, the Caloosa Golf & Country Club, 2115 Caloosa Blvd., hosted its ninth annual Memorial Day golf tournament and remembrance ceremony a day before the rest of the country celebrated the national holiday.
Before the start of the tournament, retired Navy Cmdr. Bo Heininger and retired Army Col. John Stanfield led a brief service as members paused to remember those who have died in our nation's service.
They were not the only people honored at this year's tournament.
After the national anthem, club members gathered around the flagpole for a brief ceremony in the club's memorial garden. The names of Caloosa members who had passed away during the past year were read aloud.
Also recognized were club members' loved ones who are serving in the military and those who have lost their lives in defense of their country.
After the flagpole ceremony, members participated in a scramble-mixer tournament consisting of three couples per team.
The winning team was made up of John and Merlene Smithyman, Spanky and Vera Thompson, Dessie and Ed Mahoney.
Members also enjoyed an ice cream social and refreshments after the tournament.
The tournament also featured women's and men's closest-to-the-pin contests on the par 3 holes.
Winners among the men were Rod Brown, George Lang and Loren Schulenberg. Secondary winners were Mike Almaguer, Jack Morto and Gerd Schneider.
Winners among the women were Mary Brown, Anita Ciota and Maxine Thompson. Secondary winners were Karen Hanson, Peggy Horn and Dottie Morgan.
