RUSKIN - It might have been accidental; it might be a crime. But whatever it was, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
Someone dumped roofing nails on 19th Avenue Northwest near the entrance of E.G. Simmons Park early Sunday morning, said park ranger Paul Calderoni.
The nails ruined the tires on Calderoni's truck, as well as another ranger's vehicle and several park patrons. Calderoni estimated the damage in the thousands of dollars.
"Just the cost of replacing the rangers' tires will be $1,500 to $1,800," Calderoni said. "Mine aIone were $300 apiece and I just bought them two weeks ago."
The incident happened about 6 a.m., four hours before the gates opened for the second day of the Ruskin Seafood Festival, which took place at the park.
"If this was a crime, it would be criminal mischief," said Deputy Chris Girard, who was assigned the case. "But we have no suspects at this time."
